Welcome to the Evolution and one the captain’s favorite Grand Haven cruises. We head down the river under the Grand Haven draw bridge past the freighter ships and the power plant where the river widens into the downtown area. We pass the Grand Haven municipal marina and the outdoor theater and the beginning of the popular Grand Haven board walk. The boardwalk that stretches from downtown to the Grand Haven State Park and Pier. Then we head right past the Grand Haven Coast Guard Station. These are the number 1 and 2 attractions in the Grand Haven area.
Get your camera ready, this is sure to present a Kodak moment. The channel opens up with water as far as you can see North South and West into Lake Michigan. Beaches and dunes line the shoreline to starboard and port as we pass the end of the pier and the Grand Haven Light House. We take a slow cruise up and down the shoreline just in time for the Lake Michigan sunset. If the timing is right we can stop for a while at the Grand Haven Musical Fountain on the way back to the slip.
If the big lake is too rough or you just want to extend your relaxing time on the water we can head up the seven mile long Spring Lake. Just across the Grand River from the slip past the Spring Lake Holiday Inn and under the M104 bridge we enter Spring Lake. The lake is always busy on nice summer days with boaters, skiers, personal water craft and fisherman. The magnificent water front homes bring a variety of landscaping and engineering. We pass Petty’s Bayou and can take a spin through Hanky Pank Bayou (a popular anchorage and party spot on Spring Lake). These are Grand Haven cruises to Spring Lake.

The Grand River provides us with about 15 safe navigable miles of nature, scenic and solitude cruising. The Grand also provides the public with an abundance of water sports including boating, skiing, canoeing and kayaking, sailing, and fishing. There are three marinas in the 15 mile stretch as well as Lloyds, Dermo, Pottawatomie, Bruce’s and Millhouse Bayous. We pass the mouth of Crockery Creek and can go as far as the Bass River Basin in the middle of the Bass River Recreation area. This is a great place for an over night anchorage at the shore with s’mores on the camp fire at night and a hot cup of coffee and magnificent sunrise in the morning. This also can be a hot spot for boaters and fishermen. If you’re looking for unique Grand Haven cruises then you must try the Grand River!
The Grand River History
The Grand River is the longest river in the U.S. state of Michigan. It runs 252 miles through the cities of Jackson, Eaton Rapids, Lansing, Grand Ledge, Portland, Ionia, Lowell, Grand Rapids, and Grand Haven. The City of Grand Rapids was built on the site of a large rapids on the river! Although these have disappeared after the installation of a low-head dam and later a fish ladder. The Grand has several dams along its length but is a trout and salmon stream for much of its length. Pollution control, since the enactment of the Clean Water Act, has greatly improved the water quality of the river and the fish have responded.
The smallmouth bass is the primary resident game fish of the mainstream and many of the tributaries. Walleye, northern pike, channel and flathead catfish, and carp also provide great fly rod sport in the mainstream. These fish, along with brown and brook trout, are also found in the Grand’s tributaries. When the water temperature of the Grand cools in the fall coho and chinook salmon, steelhead, lake and brown trout join the resident fish.
